University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) was founded in 1964, on the initiative of the figures and the Regional Leadership of Muhammadiyah Malang. At the beginning of UMM is a branch of the University of Muhammadiyah Jakarta, which was established by the Foundation University of Muhammadiyah Jakarta by the Notary R. Sihojo Wongsowidjojo in Jakarta No. 71 tang-gal June 19, 1963.
At that time, UMM has 3 (three) faculties, namely (1) Faculty of Economics, (2) Faculty of Law, and (3) the Faculty of Education (Guidance and Counseling) Department of Religious Education. Third faculty received Registered status from the Ministry of Education and Culture, Directorate General of Higher Education in 1966 by Decree No. 68 / B-SWT / p / 1966 dated December 30, 1966.
On July 1, 1968 UMM became an official university stand-alone (separate from the University of Muhammadiyah Jakarta), whose implementation is in the hands of the Foundation University of Muhammadiyah Malang, by the Notary R. Sudiono, No. 2 dated 1 July 1968. In the next development certificate is then updated by the Notary G. Kamarudzaman No. 7 On June 6, 1975, and renewed again by the Notary Kumalasari, SH No. 026 dated November 24, 1988 and registered at the Court of Malang State No. 88 / PP / YYS / XI / 1988 dated 28 November 1988.
In 1968, UMM add new faculties, namely the Faculty of Social Welfare which is fi'lial of the Faculty of Social Welfare, University of Muhammadiyah Jakarta. Thus, at that UMM has had four faculties. In addition, the Guidance and Counseling Department of Religious Education of the Faculty of Religion enroll as under the auspices of the Department of Religion at the Faculty Tarbiyah name.
In 1970 the Faculty of MT is gaining equal status with the College of Islamic Studies (IAIN), by the Decree of the Minister of Religion No. 50 of 1970. In the same year the Faculty of Social Welfare changed its name to the Faculty of Social Sciences with the Department of Social Welfare. Then in 1975 the Faculty is officially independent (separate from the University of Muhammadiyah Jakarta) with Registered Decree No. 022 A / 1/1975 dated 16 April 1975.
Faculty were then added to the Faculty of Engineering, namely in 1977. In 1980 it opened the Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Animal Husbandry then followed. Between 1983 to 1993, added new majors and improved status suudah majors there. The latter, in 1993 UMM opened Graduate Program Master of Management and Master of Rural Sociology

Until the 1994/1995 academic year, the University of Muhammadiyah Malang has had 9 faculties and 25 departments / courses strata Si, two courses strata-S2, and one college / strata-D3 of Nursing.
In the span of thirty years of traveling this UMM (1964- 1994), the most significant development was started in 1983's. From that moment onwards UMM record very impressive growth, both in the field of improving the status of the Department, the administrative reform, the addition of facilities and campus facilities, as well as adding and improving the quality of management (administrative and academic). In 2009, UMM combines the Faculty of Agriculture and Faculty of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries into the Faculty of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry to fit the consortium of Agricultural Sciences.
In the field of physical facilities and academic facilities, now available three campuses: Campus I in Jalan Bandung No. 1, Campus II at Jalan Dam Sutami No. 188A, and Campus III (Integrated Campus) on Highway Tlogo Mas. In the area of increasing the quantity and quality of academic personnel, have been carried out (1) recruitment of young teachers who come from various leading universities in Java, (2) Improvement of the quality of the lecturers by sending them for further studies (S2 and S3) in as well as abroad.
Thanks to the struggle that knows no stopping this, so now UMM has been transformed in the direction of higher education alternatives.
